Hello,
In this edition I would like to share with you my advise when it comes to software solutions for recording remote podcast interviews. I hope this will be of use to you.
Tool or Resource of the Week
Most people will make do with what they already know and works, for many this is perfectly acceptable because most software records good audio and video these days. Since podcasting has become more popular there have been some new industry specific developments for remote recording software.
I’ll share with you some common software solutions with their benefits, drawbacks and your editors preference. I’ve received files from all of these options and I’ll let you know my thoughts on quality and efficiency.
Zoom
Positive: Everyone has it, knows what to expect and how to use the software. You will be able to interview everyone with ease.
Negative: They record lower quality audio and video. Everything is recorded in the cloud then downloaded either to their server or your local computer after the call has ended. This means if the internet for anyone cuts out that moment is gone forever.
Thoughts: Use it if you’re comfortable with it already, mistakes from the software happen very rarely and I can almost always cover them up. My job is to make you sound great with what you provide, I’m always happy with zoom recordings.
With Zoom it’s important to go into settings, recording settings and select “record to separate files”.
The three cloud based solutions below all allow you to record the audio and video files for each participant on everyone’s local computer in combination with a cloud backup, these files upload to the server automatically during the call.
Zencastr
Positive: Along with the local recording they allow you to produce and host episodes all from inside their software.
Negative: Overstretched and possibly overwhelming not being a focused tool. No free trial.
Thoughts: The files you get from this software are good but it’s the solution I need to assist with the most because of their user interface.
Riverside
Positive: Along with the local recording they allow you to record video in 4k at the base price. They are a reliable option for remote recording interview podcasts.
Negative: From my experience, very few.
Thoughts: This is a good all round tool that is consistently innovating in the right places
Squadcast
Positive: Along with the local recording they are doing everything right for podcasters, they have perfect integration to other software like Google Drive, Zapier and Calendly. They are also the same company as Descript, you will have access to this software to complete some beginner recording and editing of audio and video.
Negative: From my experience, none. Even when a guest doesn’t wait for their files to upload the cloud backup is perfect quality.
Thoughts: I always recommend this to everyone, they do everything right. The automatic file transfer to Google Drive using Zapier is really special and saved you so much time. Descript is also a powerful tool you will have access to.
These are my genuine recommendations, as an editor I really like and appreciate the use of Zoom and Squadcast. If anything here is not quite right do let me know, I’m always open to learning more.
If you end up using one of these services, I have the following affiliate links. Riverside.fm SquadCast. The other’s don’t offer these programs, this did not affect my suggestions.

Behind The Scenes
This week has been very busy for me outside of work, I enjoyed a quick trip to Loch Katrine and Loch Lomond. Below is a picture from the adventure. Now that the snow is melting and the weather is getting warmer it’s becoming safer to go on longer adventures, I’ve missed them!

Conclusion
I hope this has provided value to you, many people already know of these options but I believe it’s always a good idea to share these topics for those who might benefit from them.
Thanks,
Fynn.
