What is batch recording?
The idea is very simple, instead of recording an episode when you need one, make a focused effort over a shorter length of time to record as many episodes as you feel comfortable.
Why should I batch record?
Batch recording will allow you to make the most of your time, be efficient and increase the quality of your episodes.
You’ll likely find yourself getting into a rhythm, the dust will have been shaken off and the content will feel more natural, more you.
When you record your episodes in bulk you can make them have a unified feeling. Create stories within your episodes that span over months and help tell a larger lesson to your audience.
If you’re like me, (an introvert) then the idea of setting up four interviews back to back might be the worst idea on earth, but it’s worth it. All it takes is one large push to record a months worth of episodes and now you don’t need to think or stress about it again for another three or more weeks.
Keep this cadence going and then you will have a large backlog of episodes to fall back on if you become ill, want to go on holiday or your business need your attention. Taking a break after recording a bunch of episodes will stop you feeling fatigued from the consistent need to record another episode. This will help keep you podcasting for a long time.
Batch recording not only helps you breathe but it also helps your team members for exactly the same reasons listed above. Personally as the editor I love batch recording, it allows me to sit down and focus on only your content. I can give it my full attention for a longer time and build a backlog that we can sit on until that episode is needed.
How to batch record?
When sending invites for interviews only allow access to your chosen recording day by blocking off all other times in your booking software.
Schedule interviews close together with short breaks, this will allow you to go over your notes for the episode ahead and relax.
With me you don’t need to worry about any spikes in post production costs, it all evens out because some weeks I will have four episodes to edit and for the next three weeks I won’t be sent any. As long as the episodes are publishing on schedule everything works out and everyone benefits.
