I don’t normally recommend Zoom to be your main solution for recording remote interviews but sometimes it’s the only option. Many of your guests might be recording from corporate computers that don’t allow the better alternatives. Zoom records the interview online rather than locally on your computer. This means when either person’s internet drops out there will be a glitch in the recording. Your own internet is likely be good enough to trust but your guests internet can not be relied upon. Below are my recommendations to record the best Zoom interview.

Hardware Checks

  • Unplug any unnecessary USB devices that could interfere with the signals of your microphone.
  • Make sure the guest does not join the call from a mobile phone.
  • Use a good external microphone if you have one.
  • Advise the guest to set the laptop down and attempt to not bump the desk/microphone.
  • If possible turn off large electronics that create a buzz or humming sound. (Fans, AC, Fridges)

Software Checks

  • Close down any unnecessary applications or tabs that might be using memory or reducing upload speeds.
  • Update Zoom to the latest version.
  • Mute all devices or use do not disturb.

Audio Settings Page Set-Up

  • Use the dropdown menu under “Microphone” and select the ideal microphone.
  • (Not necessary for guests) Uncheck “Automatically adjust microphone volume”. Whilst talking at a normal volume, adjust the input volume slider so that it stays in the green but avoiding final few bars.
  • Select “Zoom background noise removal” and choose the “Low” option. It’s better to allow me the opportunity to edit out larger sounds than to let Zoom attempt a rough attempt.

Recording Settings Page Set-Up

  • Select the option “Record a separate audio file of each participant” This is essential for good quality podcasts, it allows me to edit each voice separately.

Testimonial

Fynn is collaborative, patient and reliable. He has worked with me through many growth challenges in my business, including adjusting my service needs on multiple podcasts and A/V projects. He’s a clear communicator and always delivers on time. I’d rate him 10 out of 10!! – Bee Andreen

Many people use Zoom to record their episodes and it’s perfectly acceptable. If you’re looking to increase your audio quality I recommend Squadcast. There are a few other alternatives but that’s my recommendation. They record the interview locally and online as a backup. Feel free to reach out if you have any questions about this topic, I’m always happy to help.
